The initially emotional rejection of transgender phenomenon among Christian Churches in Slovakia has been transformed into theological rationalization without dialogue with experts and transgender people. The term “gender ideology” is used imprecisely, serves to reject liberal attitudes towards LGBTIQ+ rights, and is based on conservative theological beliefs without a deeper analysis of gender studies. They rely on interpretation of the Bible and tradition and bind the conscience of Christians to strict adherence to sexual moral standards as they are linking transgender phenomenon to original sin. Instead of offering real pastoral or social support the Churches reinterpret the concept of human dignity. This lecture analyzes the key arguments of Churches in Slovakia and shows the shifts in interpreting concepts as human dignity, freedom and self-determination in a conservative framework. It is our hypothesis that this stance legitimizes the stigmatization of transgender people in Slovakia.
